Manipal College celebrates International Nurses Day

Manipal, 16 May 2017: On the occasion of the International Nurses Day, Manipal College of Nursing Manipal and Manipal School of Nursing conducted various activities during the week. There was the blood donation camp, visit to old age home, inter-collegiate quiz competition and greeting cards were made to be distributed to the nursing administrators of Kasturba hospitals. Today is of particular important for nurses as it is the birthday of Florence Nightingale, founder of modern nursing.



The theme for this year, chosen by the International Council of Nurses was “Nurses: A voice to lead, achieving the sustainable development goals”. Prof. Joselin Mariet M, Principal, Koyili College of Nursing, Kannur, Kerala in her inaugural address said that Sustainable Development Goals were adopted by UN in 2015, to replace the Millennium Development Goals. There are 17 goals under which there are 169 targets covering a broad range of issues of the world. She stressed on the importance of each goal and the ways to achieve these goals, where nurses need to take a lead role.


On the occasion, two eminent nurses Mrs. Yashoda A, Nursing superintendent, Kasturba hospital, Manipal  and Mrs. Bhagirathi Rao, Retired ANM staff, RMCW Kaup Centre, Udupi were felicitated for their contribution towards welfare of patients, nurses and students.


Dr. Anice George, Dean, MCON said that the young nurses should be more enthusiastic about patient care which is the core of nursing profession. “It is not easy to handle patient care issues, but nurses should take the lead to achieve those goals related to patient’s health,” she added. After the inaugural function a panel discussion on the theme was also held.
